Eight short nonfiction films have been selected from a pool of 31 eligible contenders by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 81st Academy Awards.

Three to five of the shorts are eligible to earn Oscar nominations.

The eight films, in alphabetical order:

Nominations for the 81st Academy Awards will be announced Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at 5:30 a.m. PST in the academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Oscars will be presented on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 22.
