"Werner is a true original, and we are extremely proud to recognize his vast and unique contributions to the evolving art of nonfiction film," said Eddie Schmidt, IDA interim executive director, in a statement. The honor will be presented to Herzog on Dec. 5.
Among his many famed documentaries, Herzog was behind the 2005 breakout hit "Grizzly Man," which followed grizzly bear activist Timothy Treadwell's isolated time in Alaska.
As recipient of the award, Herzog follows legendary documentarians including Ken Burns and Michael Moore.
