Two years ago, Ethan and Joel Coen (pictured) won three Oscars for writing, directing and producing the dark drama "No Country for Old Men." Last year they fell short with the farce "Burn After Reading." Now they could contend again with this quasi-autobiographical story set in suburban Minneapolis in the late 1960s. Tony nominee Michael Stuhlbarg ("The Pillowman") plays the beleaguered patriarch, with newcomer Sari Lennick as his cheating wife and Richard Kind ("Spin City") as his wayward brother.
"A Serious Man" debuted at the Toronto Film Festival to positive reviews, but when it comes the Coens and award season, that means squat. While their films usually hit the mark, they are not always aiming for an Oscar. Kris Tapley of In Contention says "It is without question the siblings’ most personal film to date, an exploration of the 'What does it all mean?' thoughts that plague each of us on a daily basis."
