1971: Gene Hackman |
FRESH APPROACH: Gene Hackman was known primarily as a character actor throughout the ‘60s. But his street-smart portrayal of New York City cop Popeye Doyle in “The French Connection” (1971) captured the kind of gritty, anti-establishment feeling running through New Hollywood at the time and earned Hackman the best actor nod.
