'Sunday Bloody Sunday' (1971)
Peter Finch is perhaps the first actor ever nominated for playing a gay character. In this John Schlesinger film, he plays a homosexual Jewish doctor in a love triangle with a young bisexual designer (Murray Head) and a divorcee (Glenda Jackson). The film, one of the first major movies to show two men making love, earned four nominations, and also features Daniel Day-Lewis in his uncredited screen debut, as a young vandal.
