As temperatures rise, celebs try even harder to look fresh.
Summer's great for all the gossip rag mags that routinely run excruciatingly candid celeb swimsuit shots and rate the Best and Worst Beach Bods. I'll bet Kate Hudson is still reeling from that horrifying shot of her running on the beach in a bikini. Who knew that loose skin could move independently from the stomach like that?
But by July, the red carpet fashion scene seriously dries up.
Why? Well first, it's hot. No one looks hot when they're physically hot. Think shiny noses, blotchy makeup, wavy or frizzy hair and pitted-out sleeves. Not to mention the all-too-common misuse of self-tanners, which can turn porcelain-skinned beauties shades of brown and orange not found in nature.
Bright sun is also unforgiving, even to famous faces. Thanks to the lingering late light of daylight saving time, carpet-crawlers have to squint when being photographed. This makes someone 20 look 50 and someone 50 look like the Crypt Keeper. Even Michelle Pfeiffer, at 49, had to work extra hard this week to look fresh at the premiere of "Hairspray." Just one more minute on that hot carpet and, trust me, things would have gone downhill fast.
Plus, the summer carpets just feel more casual and therefore less "important" and less fashion-conscious than most fall/winter/spring events.
This week's red carpet picks were plucked from laid-back happenings such as the ESPY awards/parties, the "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" premiere, as well as (you can tell we're getting desperate here) arrivals at "The Late Show" in New York.
