What are the 'Behind the Camera' awards?
Want a foolproof, surefire way to get Sean Penn, Jodie Foster, Charlie Kaufman and Julian Schnabel to come to a fledgling awards fete?

Give an award to one of their friends or colleagues.

Penn showed up to present an award to his "Into the Wild" film editor, Jay Cassidy, at the second annual Hamilton/Hollywood Life "Behind the Camera" awards and admitted that he actually kept his friend hostage during the "Wild" film editing, locked in the guest cottage on his San Francisco estate.

And Foster, who gave an award to her "The Brave One" cinematographer Phillippe Rousselot, recalled "all those late nights on the set, talking about politics in French while we were sitting in a pool of fake blood."

Ah, the good times.

Last night's infant awards, held at the Highlands restaurant and sponsored by Hamilton watches, is meticulously well-timed in the early portion of the awards campaign season.

Nothing screams "Oscar" louder than holding an award, any award. It's a fact of Hollywood life that could eventually make this little awards gala an important pit stop on the road to Oscar glory.

No surprise that this year's honorees, all awarded for creative excellence in filmmaking, included potential Oscar nominees: "Knocked Up" screenwriter Judd Apatow, "Across the Universe" production designer Mark Friedberg, "Juno" director Jason Reitman, "Sweeney Todd" costume designer Colleen Atwood and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" producer Jon Kilik.

Seth Rogen, there to present to his buddy Apatow, hopped onstage after Hamilton honcho Matthias Breschan, gave a short but shockingly amusing speech.

"Holy ..., how hot was that German guy who owns the watch company?" an amazed Rogen asked. " ... He got laughs and he's handsome and has a cool accent. I would [have sex with] that guy. But I would expect a watch afterwards. OK, where's my watch?"
