Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis, representative for the 32nd district in California, issued a statement on the floor of the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. regarding the recent Golden Globe awards won by actress America Ferrara and the show on which she appears, "Ugly Betty."
In her statement, Solis said "The people we see and hear on television and in movies have great influence on the attitudes of all Americans Through her work, Ms. Ferrera is breaking down barriers for Latinos in prime-time television. I commend America and everyone involved in 'Ugly Betty' for helping break down stereotypes and provide a role model for young Latinas."
According to statistics on Solis' own website, the 32nd district, which covers pasts of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, has a population that is 63 percent Latino.
