As many awards shows as a hardened Kudos Crasher like myself has been through, there is still a rush of adrenaline each time I approach the carpet. And no show knows how to generate that rush better than the Papa Bear of them all, the Academy Awards, year 79.

With every New Year, the scent of trophies fills the West Los Angeles air. And so once again, I pick up my tux from the dry cleaners and head back onto the awards trail.

After a long, hard winter's march. the trophy trail ends at the Big Enchilada — the 78th annual Academy Awards. Tonight, my tux gets to take one last cruise around the block, as I am a ticketed and parking-permitted guest at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. My yellow brick road really has led to the Emerald City.

At 5:38 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning each January, the Road to Oscars begins with a five-minute reading of nominees' names under glaring klieg lights at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. The Road to Nominations Announcements, however, starts the midnight before, with a minutely choreographed kabuki dance in which the academy theater opens to the press and production staff who prepare for the great moment, and to me, who comes to watch their work.

If producers are the ultimate Hollywood heavyweights, the biggest hitters in a town filled with power players, it's a little ironic that their Producers Guild Awards show is an often-forgotten stepchild of the awards season.
