'General Hospital' |
By Tom O'Neil, The Envelope
For years, "General Hospital" has been in a close battle with "The Young and the Restless" over the most awards for best drama series. "Y&R" ruled until the late 1990s, when "GH" pulled ahead and has since managed to fend off threats posed by periodic wins by "Y&R." The score: "GH" 9, "Y&R" 7.
In distant third is "As the World Turns," with four. There's a three-way tie for fourth place among " Santa Barbara," "All My Children" and "Guiding Light" (3 wins each). "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "Passions" have never won. Neither did yesterday's "Search for Tomorrow."

O'Neil's special interest is how the awards affect each other, particularly the top film prizes that can be viewed as one single gold derby with the Oscars as the finish line. Consider what happened to "Chariots of Fire," for example. In 1981, it emerged from obscurity to win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the National Board of Review, then fell behind "Reds" and "Atlantic City" at the film critics' awards and Golden Globes, then trotted ahead as best-picture champ at the Oscars.
