“Greetings, indie weirdos,” was how host Rainn Wilson kicked off the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon. The rain held off just long enough for organizers to hustle everyone inside the large tent near the beach in Santa Monica. Wilson’s opening remarks also started up a mock feud with actor Philip Seymour Hoffman that provided a throughline to the show.
