Detour
Detour: Gina Tognoni took a passage to India instead of a red carpet stroll to the Daytime Emmys. It's an awards show, girl. Not a costume party!

The divalicious and the disastrous

Daytime stars don designer gowns and accessories -- so what went wrong?

Ah, the Daytime Emmys!

Nervous nominees and breathless presenters wearing glitzy designer gowns, showing off major bling and teetering down the red carpet in front of the Kodak Theatre in their Jimmy Choos.

Why, it's just like the Oscars!

Only not.

No question that the fashion focus was stronger at this year's awards, what with the live viewer vote-in going up on Soapnet.com and an actual Dr. Scholl's step-up shoe cam that gushing hostess Chandra Wilson kept making everyone put their foot on.

And is it just me or was Chandra a "huge fan" of "since forever" of every single soap star she talked to during the pre-show? Guess we know what she was doing all these years while waiting for her big "Grey's Anatomy" break.

As for the gowns.. There was a BCBG dress, a J. Crew gown (yikes) and more than one costume designer from the show, always an ill-advised idea. But in general this year's attendees looked pretty darned excited to rattle off major A-list designers such as Nicole Miller, Pamella Roland, Marchesa, John Galliano, Jenny Packham, Gucci, Christian LaCroix, even Roberto Cavalli.

But despite international designer intervention, the daytime ladies still looked like they were trying a little too hard. Maybe it's the tortured, overdone hair, the makeup applied with a spatula or the cheesy, ditzy jewelry. Sometimes the dress just plain doesn't fit properly. Whatever it is, something just seems to go awry before the gals step foot on the carpet and face the photographers.

But it's all in the daytime programming spirit, isn't it? All that delicious overacting, the dramatic entrances (and exits), exaggerated sneers, wicked fade-outs and suspicious raised eyebrows. Admit it, we love it all!

Let's hope these daytime divas never change. Then the Daytime Emmys would be as boring as … the Oscars!
